Diary Entry #2

The First of April, 1848

April 1, 1848

Dear Diary,

We've officially left Independence, so I thought I'd write what supplies we bought for the trip. Being that I worked as a carpenter, I could purchase supplies for us and have money left over. I bought 4 yolk of oxen that cost $160, 1200 pounds of food for $240, 10 sets of clothes costing $100, 5 boxes of ammunition for $10, and $90 worth of spare parts that include 3 wagon wheels, 3 wagon axles and 3 wagon tongues. I spent $600 so we could have $200 left over for emergencies. We're starting at a strenuous pace to waste as little time as possible. We know that if we take too long, we could get caught in the winter and that is the opposite of what we need.

Sincerely, a prepared settler
